Scenario B: Residential Roofs and High-End Home Installations

  1. Project scale: Over 50 kW? Jump to Scenario A. Under 5 kW and not grid-tied? Consider Scenario C. In between? That’s residential (Scenario B).
  2. Roof space vs. energy need: If you have limited space and need big output, go high efficiency (Gen 7/8). If space is abundant, a lower tier may be fine.
  3. Reliability expectations: Is this an investment for a PPA? The 40-year warranty justifies itself. For a shed that might get replaced in 10 years? Skip it.
  4. Shadow analysis: Any trees or structures nearby? If yes, IBC panels (like Maxeon) are worth the premium. If it’s a wide open field, conventional panels perform similarly.

One more thing — if you’re sourcing for multiple sites, order from one Maxeon distributor that lists all fees upfront. I’ve learned to ask “what’s NOT included” before “what’s the price.” The supplier who hides shipping or inverter integration fees costs you later. Maxeon’s authorized distributors (like for Gen 7) usually have transparent quotes.

Bottom line: match the panel to your project, not the other way around. I made that mistake twice. You don’t have to.
