I'm an office administrator for a company of about 200 people, and I handle purchasing for small solar projects. I process roughly 60–80 purchase orders a year and report to both operations and finance, so I ask the same kinds of questions you probably do: what is this for, what does it cost over time, and who will have to deal with it later.
This is a six-step checklist for anyone comparing products like Maxeon 6 solar panels, a shed solar kit with battery, or a solar generator at Home Depot. I use the same process whether the budget is $600 or $60,000. The scale changes, but the questions don't.

The first step sounds too simple, and it is the one that caused our first mistake. In 2023, our team ordered a portable power station when we actually needed a fixed shed kit for a gate opener. The portable unit worked, but it became a device that had to be carried outside and charged, which is not what the maintenance crew wanted. We ended up buying the right kit anyway.
Write one sentence that describes the job. For example:
- Keep lights and phone chargers running in a storage shed for three cloudy days.
- Run security cameras and a small heater for a water meter room.
- Provide backup power for a laptop and a router during outages.
If you can't write that sentence, don't place the order. The panel, battery, and inverter all follow from the job.
Step 2: Know the Difference Between a Shed Solar Kit and a Solar Generator
A shed solar kit with battery is normally a fixed system: a solar panel mounted on or near the shed, a charge controller, a battery, and sometimes an inverter. It is meant to stay there and power something specific day after day.
A solar generator, on the other hand, is usually a portable power station with an optional solar input. If you search solar generator Home Depot, you will mostly see power stations you can move around. That is a different product from a mounted kit. Put another way: a solar generator gives you electricity in a box; a shed kit gives you a small power plant for one building.
Neither is bad. They just solve different problems. If you need continuous power for a security camera, a portable power station may not be designed for that workload. If you want emergency power during an outage, a fixed shed kit may be more work to install than you need.
Step 3: Check the Mounting Surface Before Picking a 440W Module
When I first started reviewing solar products, I assumed the higher-wattage module was automatically better. A 440W panel sounds impressive, but if it is six inches too wide for the roof, it is just a number. This is the step I used to skip.
A 440W panel is a physical object. It has dimensions, weight, and wind load. It needs racking that fits the roof or ground structure. If your shed has a shallow-pitch roof, the mounting angle may not be ideal, and a heavy module may add stress to the frame.
In 2024, our first quote for a shed kit would have overhung the roofline by six inches. The vendor caught it only because I sent measurements before ordering. I almost skipped that step.
Before comparing brands, measure the available area and check the direction the roof faces. If the site is mostly shaded, no premium module will fix a poor location. Maxeon 6 solar panels are interesting because the rear-contact IBC design leaves the front surface cleaner, with less metal blocking sunlight. That is a design advantage, not a guarantee.
Step 4: Read the Datasheet and the Warranty, Not Just the Brand Name
Premium modules deserve a premium review process. As of January 2025, Maxeon's published spec sheet for a Maxeon Solar Technologies 440W class module lists a 40-year linear power warranty and a high efficiency rating. Those are both good things to see, but verify the current document before you budget. Manufacturers update models and numbers.
What to check in the datasheet:
- Rated power and power tolerance.
- Temperature coefficient.
- Mechanical load rating for wind and snow.
- Certification marks such as IEC or UL.
The 40-year warranty only matters if the company will still be around and the warranty covers more than a pro-rated panel price. Ask whether labor, shipping, and removal are included. That is the kind of question an administrator asks after being burned by a vendor who wrote handwritten invoices and no service plan.
One more thing: be careful with environmental claims. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), terms like recyclable need to be substantiated. If a sales rep says a module is fully recyclable, ask how and where.
Step 5: Ask Whether Bifacial Solar Panels Are Actually Worth the Extra Cost
Are bifacial solar panels worth the extra cost? In my view, not automatically. It depends on how much light actually reaches the rear side.
Bifacial panels collect light from both sides. That only helps if there is reflected light coming from below. A ground mount with white gravel, good clearance, and a single-row layout can capture meaningful rear-side gain. A dark roof with a low tilt and no gap behind the panel? Most of the potential gain disappears.
It took me two small projects and three installer conversations to understand that this is a geometry question before it is a panel quality question. I no longer pay extra for bifacial just because the spec sheet says it can make more power. At least, that's been my experience in our region.
If an installer recommends bifacial, ask for a simulation that shows the expected rear-side gain percentage. If they can't produce one, assume zero gain for budgeting. On a shed roof, bifacial is usually not worth the extra cost. For a ground mount with good reflectance, it might be.
Step 6: Size the Battery for Your Load, Not for the Brochure
A shed solar kit with battery and a solar generator you can find at Home Depot both put a battery at the center of the design. The battery is the most expensive part to replace, so it deserves more attention than the panel.
Start with the load. A 100-watt security light running 10 hours a day needs about 1 kWh per day. If you want three days of autonomy without sun, that is roughly 3 kWh of usable capacity. Then check the battery's usable capacity, not just its total capacity. Lead-acid batteries should not regularly be discharged below 50%. LiFePO4 can usually go deeper, but it costs more up front.
Roughly speaking, a 1 kWh battery powers a 100W load for about 10 hours. Double the battery, double the time. But the inverter and charge controller also matter. If the inverter draws idle power all day, a small battery can drain itself doing nothing.
Ask the vendor for the battery chemistry, cycle life, depth-of-discharge limit, and warranty. Write it down. If they can't explain it, that is a red flag.
Final Notes and Common Mistakes
Three mistakes show up again and again in my purchase orders:
- Buying the panel before measuring the mounting surface.
- Confusing a portable solar generator with a fixed shed solar kit.
- Comparing only watts and price while ignoring battery compatibility, wire size, and the inverter.
Take current prices with a grain of salt. Panel pricing and local incentives change quickly. Everything in this checklist is what I was seeing as of January 2025. Verify current specs and tax credit rules before you commit.
